Write a commentThe next meeting of the Oswego County Legislature is on Thursday, September 11th at 7pm in the Oswego County Building on 46 East Bridge Street.
The regular legislative meeting may last 2 to 3 hours and is not open to public comment unless you want to address the resolution being discussed at that time. After the meeting is adjourned is the time for the public session to begin. Before the meeting there is a signup sheet for your name and the subject you would like to comment on. Your name will be called and you will have 5 minutes to speak. If you would like to comment on the resolution that is being discussed, you must indicate that on the top of the sign up sheet.
Recently we were told the Oswego County Sheriff Department will beef up their presence at these meetings. Since early this year, there has been in attendance people holding signs sitting or standing at the back of the room. Under no circumstances has there been any discourse or disruption before, during or after the meeting. It is unfortunate the Legislators feel threatened by a mix of county voters, some holding signs. All too often during the public session, members of the legislature leave without listening to their constituents concerns. It is apparent there is a disconnect between the legislators and their constituents.
The County Legislature has 25 representatives, 23 are Republican and 2 are Democrats. Oswego County has been controlled for over 100 years by the Republican Party. This year the Legislators took their 9th consecutive pay raise. A pay raise reflects a job well done. The finished product is apparently not very good. Oswego County has remained one of the poorest counties in New York State.
If you are not happy with how our County is run, you have a constitutional right to attend these meetings and voice your concerns. Please attend the next meeting on Thursday, September 11th, at 7pm.
