One Oswego woman, Arlene Blum, and her daughter, Lisa Gray, were excited to share the story of how a local jewelery store went above and beyond to repair Blum's wedding rings when she had to have them cut off while at the Oswego Hospital.
DuFore's for Diamonds is a family-owned business that has been around since John DuFore established it in 1951. Today, Greg and Mark DuFore are the co-owners of the popular jewelery store.
In June of 2012, Blum ended up in the Intensive Care Unit, suffering from a heart attack.
Gray, who is the events manager for The Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce, recalled the amount of swelling in her mother's fingers seemed unbearable.
"We kept thinking it was time; the rings had to be cut off before the swelling increased," Gray said.
This was not the first time Blum had to have her rings cut off. Gray said a couple of years ago Blum had broken her wrist and had to have her rings cut off. She described how devastated her mother was to wake up from being sedated to find her rings broken.
"Next time, call one of us," Greg DuFore, the president and co-owner of DuFore's Jeweler's, told Gray.
DuFore said they have known the family for a long time and described them as extremely loyal customers. The jewelers got the opportunity to reward Blum for that loyalty last summer.
"My mother did not want the rings taken off of her," Gray said. "It was around 6 or 7 p.m. when I called up the DuFore's and Mark answered right away. He came straight to the I.C.U and fixed the rings by the next morning.".
When Blum woke up, her daughter presented the rings to her. The wedding band and engagement ring were both in great condition.
"You can't get loyal service like that from just any place. This is why you should shop locally and get to know your merchants," said Gray.
"I remember walking over to Maria's for lunch the one day and seeing the whole family out, including Arlene," DuFore said. "This was just amazing to me."
Blum is doing well to this day and she and her husband will celebrate heir 55th anniversary this upcoming summer.
DuFore's for Diamonds is conveniently located at 94 W. Second St.
