The H. Lee White Maritime Museum held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception on Wednesday evening in the River View Room at GS Steamers at the Clarion Hotel & Suites in Oswego.
Following hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, President of the Museum's Board of Trustees Bill Schickling addressed the gathering. He credited the efforts of the Museum's amazing crew of volunteers and staff members for the successful 2023 season, Schickling then spoke of the Board's vision of a new building to house the Museum's steadily growing collection of artifacts and future program offerings.
Executive Director Mercedes Niess then took over for an overview of this year's programs and presentations at the Museum. Highlights included visits from several touring tall ships and research vessels, several workshops for crafts and children's programs, a revival of Oswego Paddlefest, a Maritime Captain's Course, and the popular Christmas at Sea Open House.
Niess then shifted to volunteer recognition and awards presentations. Gifts of appreciation were given to volunteers at the 30, 60, and 150-hour levels, along with special mention of volunteer Tim Woodward who volunteered at the Museum every day this year, and Volunteers of the Year Award winners Gail and Ned Goebricher.
Board Vice President Bob Morgan was recognized for his outstanding fundraising efforts throughout the year, and then conducted the drawing for the Museum's raffle. The 1st prize winner received a weekend lodging, dining and Splash Zone package courtesy of the Clarion Hotel & Suites.
In closing, Niess thanked all the agencies, organizations and businesses that assisted the H. Lee White Marine Museum throughout 2023, and once again credited and thanked all the volunteers who made the year a successful one.
