Write a commentMary Irene Smith, 89, of Oswego passed away Wednesday evening at the Oswego Hospital after a short illness.
She was born in Oswego and was the daughter of the late Robert D. and Irene Gilbert Halpin.
Mary Irene, known by most as “Irene”, was a graduate of St. John’s School, Oswego High School, and advanced her education in nursing. She was employed as a nurse for several decades working for a number of healthcare facilities as well as pediatricians Dr. Garo Taft and Dr. Dorothy Wright.
She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.
Irene treasured the time she spent with her family and cherished her friends endlessly. She formed friendships everywhere she went and touched those in a special way with her devotion to prayer and loving personality. She enjoyed listening and dancing to Tony Bennet and JoAnn Castle.
She is survived by her loving children, Peter G. (Mary) Smith, Thomas Gregory (Jody) Smith, and Dr. Joseph M. Smith, her grandchildren, Stephanie (Matthew) Dawson, Thomas (Thi) Smith and Shannon Paradise, her great grandchildren, Ryan and Grace Dawson, several nieces, and her cherished friends, Dr. Dorothy Wright, Emily Alberts and Amy Warner.
She was predeceased by her husband Joseph R. Smith, daughter Margaret A. Smith, and brothers Robert G. Halpin and Thomas J. Halpin.
Calling hours will be held Sunday 2-4 PM at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home in Oswego. Funeral services will be held Monday 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
