Mayor Corradino presented members of the Children's Board of Oswego with a proclamation designating March as Poison Prevention Month in the City of Oswego.

❔Did you know that according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, children and teens comprise the majority of human poison exposures at 56%. On average, it is reported that a child is poisoned every 30 seconds in the United States, equaling 2,880 children per day?

❔Did you also know that 9 out of 10 poisonings of children occur in the home with the leading cause being medication, followed by household cleaners, paints and pesticides?

Awareness is the key to prevention, and then taking proactive steps to safeguard your homes by securing hazardous substances, properly storing medications, keeping poison control numbers easily accessible, and practicing safe habits in all areas of daily life is the easiest way to prevent accidental poisonings.

The Children's Board, spearheading this awareness initiative, is comprised of volunteers who commit to work on specific projects designed to improve the lives of children in the greater Oswego community. The Children's Board has been in existence for over 80 years. They are a not for profit community organization dedicated to enhancing the physical, emotional, and cultural well-being of the children of Oswego County.
