Mike Bond Wins Battle, Dave Cliff Wins War in SBS Championship

Mike Bond drove to victory lane in the Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super division during Oswego Speedway’s championship finale on Saturday presented by Bosco’s Food Market and U-Pull U-Save Auto Parts, but it was Dave Cliff earning the series championship at night’s end in the Tim Barbeau Racing No. 50.

The championship is the second for both Cliff and Barbeau, although they each came separately of one another.

Cliff earned his first SBS title in his family owned No. 06 in 2010, while Barbeau claimed an owners title with Dave Gruel driving his machine in 2009.

Bond, who started ninth on the grid, stole the lead from Mike Bruce at lap 23 to go on to score his fourth win of the season and 36th career Oswego victory over Bruce, Jesse Bearup, Camden Proud, and Tyler Shullick.

A seventh place finish in the night’s final rundown was enough for Cliff to secure his second driver’s championship, after coming into the night with a 47-point edge on Jack Patrick.

“I tried to race as hard as I could, but the car wasn’t the best it’s been all year tonight,” said Dave Cliff. “So I found what I thought was a good place to hang out and run around. Hats off to Mike (Bond), he charged the second half of the year and did what he had to do tonight to give himself a shot, but we did what we had to do and came home with a good finish.”

Kreig Heroth, Patrick, Dalton Doyle, and Barry Kingsley joined Cliff in the top ten run down at night’s end.

Bearup and Kingsley brought the 22 car Pathfinder Bank SBS field to the Cam’s Pizzeria green flag Saturday with Bearup taking the early lead in the No. 37.

Bearup held command early but the show on the Speedway was Anthony Losurdo, Bruce, and Bond as they charged through the pack.

By lap nine Losurdo, Bruce, and Bond had moved to second through fourth on the grid giving chase to leader Bearup as the halfway flags approached.

Unfortunately one of the key players would drop by the wayside at lap 17 as Losurdo, who was battling all season for a top three position in the championship, lost the engine on the No. 1 ride and dropped out of the race.

Losurdo’s move to the infield brought Bruce to the runner-up position ahead of Bond, Proud, Heroth, Shullick, and Cliff.

Bearup put on a great drive for the majority of the event but finally gave way at lap 20 to Bruce and Bond who managed to muscle their way by the No. 37 to take over the first and second positions.

Bruce would lead two circuits in the No. 22 before Bond charged on by in the No. 74 to take the lead for good at lap 23.

Bond would then run away, never again challenged, to his fourth win of the season moving the longtime veteran to the second position in the standings, unofficially.

“Mikey (Bruce) was getting loose there and drifting up, so it was hard to get a run on him on the outside,” said Bond. “So I had to just wait for him to get really loose so I could get that little bit extra.”

Shell Shock Custom Helmet Paint heat race victories went to Bearup, Bond, and Bruce.

The Sherwood Racing Wheels Lap Leader Award and Lighthouse Lanes Up and Comer Award went to Bearup with Bond earning the Lighthouse Lanes Hard Charger.

Proud was the White’s Car Care 4th place finishers with Losurdo the Bacc-Off Hard Luck recipient.
