Night Hike offered at Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center

The woods are always different at night.

Sounds seem louder and stranger, and terrain known well by day becomes unfamiliar. Odors are more prominent as one’s body relies on other senses to fill in for reduced vision.  Since most people spend little time outside in the dark, it’s natural to be less familiar with this nocturnal world.  However, this month presents an ample opportunity to experience nature after sundown.

The Oswego County 4-H Natural Resources Educator will lead a full moon hike on December 5th from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Before heading out on the trail, the program will begin inside the Schoeck Building, where participants will review lunar knowledge and perhaps learn something new. After putting on winter layers, attendees will use flashlights to explore the woods. With a clear sky—and a pair of binoculars—participants may enjoy an ideal view of the full moon up close.

This program is open to people of all ages, and Oswego County residency is not required. The program fee is $4 per person or up to $12 per family. Registration is available at https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/FullMoonHike2_235. For questions or more information, contact Katrina Relyea, 4-H Natural Resources Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County 4-H, at (315) 963-7286 ext. 401 or kmr276@cornell.edu.
