Nina Hastings, 103, a resident of Oswego for many years, passed away November 4, 2024.
Nina was born in White Plains, NY in 1921. She attended school there and upon graduation from high school, she enrolled in SUNY Oswego and graduated with honor in 1943.
Her first teaching job was at the Rye School in Rye, NY. She met James R. Hastings during college while they were both on student council, and they were married during WWII in 1945. Dr. Hastings predeceased her in 2010.
They returned to Oswego in 1946 when Jim was appointed to the faculty at SUNY Oswego to teach in the Industrial Arts department.
Nina became very active in civic work. She was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, American Cancer Society and the Oswego Hospital Auxiliary.
She returned to teaching after her children were in school full time, and was appointed to the faculty of Leighton School teaching first Grade. During her tenure, Nina was active in local professional groups, including the Oswego County chapter of the International Reading Association where she was elected President for two terms.
The Oswego Garden Club was of great interest as it led to participation in flower arranging and flower shows including state fair competitions where she earned many awards. The main accomplishment she received was the Tri-color Award and the Award of Distinction in shows judged by the American Federation of Garden Clubs.
On retirement from teaching, Nina was appointed to the Oswego Hospital Board for seventeen years. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and exploring America, Europe and the Far East. They were members of the Oswego Country Club for many years. Mrs. Hastings was a member of the Winter Club where she treasured the opportunity to share her love of reading with its interesting members. Playing bridge was her particularly favorite pastime. She was honored by her Alma Mater with the title of "Alumna of Distinction Award”, which she cherished.
She has resided at Springside at Seneca Hill for the last fifteen years. She felt at home there and enjoyed a very caring staff and many friends
She is survived by her son James R. Hastings Jr. and his wife Susan Cochran; and her daughter Caryl H. Hoffman and her husband Paul D. Hoffman.
Calling hours will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday November 14, 2024, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 East Second Street in Oswego.
