Families participating in Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) Head Start program in Oswego were recently treated to one of OCO`s Family Literacy Nights.

Held at OCO's Head Start classroom at Fort Ontario. Family Literacy Night offered an evening of fun activities based on well-known children's books from acclaimed author Eric Carle. Head Start Education Coordinator Evelyn Lynne, explains.

"Each activity that we did reflected the theme of the Mr. Carle's books, said Lynne. "The night started with a hearty serving of pancakes and fruit salad in acknowledgement of the books, Pancakes, Pancakes and The Very Hungry Caterpillar as children made paper fruit to feed the caterpillar. Spider webs created from paper plates and yarn, and ladybugs were made to coincide with the books The Very Busy Spider and The Grouchy Ladybug."

Lynne added that parents and children enjoyed working together to create some of the books characters. "Literacy Nights are one of the many activities that we host to foster family engagement and celebrate reading together. We had children of all ages as families from all three of our Oswego classes attended. Similar Literacy Nights were held at all of our Head Start centers and were also well attended. We received excellent feedback from both parents and children that attended and are looking forward to hosting more Literacy Nights in future.
