Sophomore golfer Sean Dain was admittedly disappointed with his freshman season as an Oswego Buccaneer.

Although he played well at times in 2012, Dain was hindered by inconsistent scoring and was often visibly frustrated – both on and off the course.

"I could tell Sean expected much more out of himself last season," said Oswego High golf Coach Dan Rose. "I could tell he wanted to compete with the best players on our team day in and day out. As a freshman, though, I never quite know how bad they want it until the off-season rolls around. The great players in all sports work the hardest in the off- season."

To say Dain 'worked hard' in the off season would be a gross understatement. Sean blanketed the Oswego Country Club driving range last spring. He wore paths between holes on the putting green this summer.

"I know there were some days he had all three meals there," Rose said with a smile. "I would often drive by the course in the morning and see Sean out on the range, alone, hitting balls. Later in the evenings when I would come home he would be on the putting green."

Dain is a new player this season.

With his team leading stroke average and his new-found confidence, Dain led the Bucs to two straight victories last week over West Genesee and Central Square. Both victories were at home and both victories came with solid 195 totals (West Genesee finished with a total of 210 and Central Square had 245).

Against West Genesee, Dain fired a match low score of even par 35 on Oswego's front side. Senior Josh Dumas, who is also having a stand-out season for the Bucs, came in with a four-over 39. Junior Alec Kunzwiler and senior Brandon Tracz had respectable scores of five-over 40.

On Friday, against Central Square, Dain shot a year low two-under round of 33 at Oswego (his second under par round of the season). His nine holes included birdies on holes one and eight and no bogeys.

"What is most impressive about Friday's score," said Coach Rose, "is that he (Dain) did it in rain, wind, and cold. It was not a particularly opportune scoring day."

Joining Sean in the Buc scoring column were fellow golfers Josh Dumas (38), Brandon Tracz (39), Alex Kemper (42), and Alec Kunzwiler (43).

"Josh (Dumas) is quite a story this season as well," commented Coach Rose about his senior starter. "So far, he has five scores in the 30s and seems to be there is every match for us. This is another player who put a lot of time in this spring and summer."

After the recent two wins, the Bucs have evened up their record at 5-5. With matches on Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 17-18) this week (one home, one away), the Bucs look to add to their win total.
