A banner filled with personalized messages of love and encouragement from the Oswego High School student body is on its way to Parkland, Florida, joining a nationwide outpouring of support for Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School.
In the wake of the Feb. 14 shooting that took the lives of 17 MSD students and staff, the Buccaneer community began looking for a way to show support to their Sunshine State peers despite being separated more than a thousand miles.
“A tragedy like that could happen anywhere and it hit me hard because the kids affected are our age,” said OHS Junior Sofia Loayza. “I wanted to do something small to show our support, to tell them to hang in there, because small gestures can mean a lot.”
After hearing news reports of an overwhelming amount of letters pouring into MSD mailboxes, Loayza decided to organize a single delivery of one item representing the entire school.
OHS officials said the hand-crafted banner, filled with signatures and messages, shows that Buccaneer students are engaged, motivated and connected with their world.
