The Oswego County Humane Society is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator of a pellet gun attack on a cat in the vicinity of Varick Street in the City of Oswego on September 10, 2017.
The cat, Waldo, owned by Robert Alexander of Oswego, survived the attack but sustained severe damage to his eyes and is now blind in one eye after being treated at Fruit Valley Veterinary Hospital.
This attack constitutes aggravated animal cruelty under the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law Section 353-a, a felony punishable by up to two years imprisonment. The Oswego County Humane Society staff and board of directors are committed to advocating for all animals that need a voice. This group made personal contributions to offer the reward. “We need to send a message throughout our community, cruelty to animals is not acceptable!” said Jo Piersma, co-founder of the local organization. “We are ready to take action to find the person who committed this heinous act”. Anyone who may have relevant details that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who committed this crime are asked to call the Humane Society office in Oswego at 315 207-1070. The privacy of all callers will be respected.
Traditionally, the local Humane Society has focused its services on a low-income spay and neuter clinic as well as fostering abandoned, surrendered or rescued cats, dogs and birds. Recently, the group has moved to take a more aggressive position in the humane treatment of animals including rescuing two abandoned dogs that had been locked in a home for several weeks and an emaciated pit bull that had been rescued in freezing temperatures from a good Samaritan. “It is our goal to ensure that all domestic animals are supported in homes that can support and understand the needs of the pets they have accepted responsibility for,” concluded Piersma.
