May is Older Americans Month, and as part of the celebration the Oswego County Office for the Aging (OFA) hosts several events for caregivers throughout the month.
“Caregivers are the quiet backbone of aging well in our communities,” said OFA Director Sara Sunday. “They provide not only assistance with daily needs, but dignity, stability and companionship at a time when these things matter most. We invite caregivers to join our events this month to discover the support and resources available to help them with the vital work they do every day.”
Professionals and caregivers can join the OFA for a caregiver services informational meeting on Friday, May 15 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the OFA, located at 74 Bunner St., Oswego. The session will cover the various resources and services available to caregivers, and attendees will be able to ask any questions that they have.
Caregivers are also invited to the Aging Forward Caregiver Education Day on Thursday, May 28. The conference is designed to provide caregivers with guidance, resources and community support and empower them with the knowledge and tools that they need to thrive. The event includes speakers from the New York State Office for the Aging (OFA), NYS Caregiver and Respite Coalition, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
Multiple area Office for the Aging agencies and related vendors will attend the Caregiver Education Day. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jefferson Community College, 1220 Coffeen St., Watertown. A park n’ ride location will be available at Tractor Supply (3779 NYS Rte. 13) in Pulaski for Oswego County caregivers interested in attending.
Registration is required and must be completed by Thursday, May 14. To register for the event, reserve a spot for the park n’ ride transportation or for more information, call the Oswego County Office for the Aging at 315-349-3484.
The Oswego County OFA also hosts a caregiver support group. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Pulaski Family Welcome Center, located at 10 Bella Rd. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19. For more information, contact Elizabeth Weimer at 315-349-3570.
