The Oswego County Legislature presented a proclamation to Oswego County Department of Social Services (DSS) staff and foster parents at its recent meeting recognizing May as Foster Parent Appreciation Month.
The proclamation serves to thank foster parents for their care and dedication while also highlighting the foster care system and raising awareness about the need for foster parents in Oswego County.
“Being a foster parent is an essential role in our community, and we are so thankful for the individuals who step up to keep our most vulnerable residents safe and secure,” said DSS Deputy Commissioner Marti Babcock. “Foster parents truly are heroes in our communities, and we’re happy to recognize them for all that they do for our children.”
May is also National Foster Care Month, which is celebrated each year to raise awareness about foster care and the ongoing need for foster parents in all communities. Approximately 200 Oswego County children are placed in the care of foster parents each month.
“Fostering is a rewarding experience that has a tremendous impact on the lives of children,” added Babcock. “We encourage anyone who may be interested in becoming a foster parent to reach out to us for more information.”
The Oswego County Department of Social Services (DSS) offers monthly virtual foster and adoptive parenting meetings. The next one is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11. Those who would like to participate and help local children and teens find a forever family can contact Patricia Pennock by Friday, June 7 to sign up for the meeting.
Call 315-963-5382 or email patricia.pennock@dfa.state.ny.us and provide an email address to register. Login information will be provided to those who pre-register. If no responses are received, the meeting will be cancelled.
With dozens of local children and teens in need of love and care, DSS encourages residents to help raise awareness about this critical issue and share this information with interested friends and family members. Residents can start to make a difference in the life of a young person by participating in this valuable program.
