Oswego County Sheriff Don Hilton recognized three members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office for their heroic actions by bestowing on them the Lifesaving Award and medal.
Deputy Max Emond was honored for the lifesaving actions he took while responding to a serious UTV accident in the Town of West Monroe in June. After discovering that a victim’s right arm had been amputated above the elbow and there was profuse bleeding, Emond promptly applied a tourniquet to the male’s upper right arm, saving his life. Sergeant Mark Walton and Deputy Mike Kraus were awarded for saving a male’s life while on marine patrol operations on the Oneida River in June. The two observed a male in the water who was struggling to swim, and working together, were able to grab onto the male and move him to a nearby ladder to exit the river. They then learned that a second male had disappeared below the water and used sonar equipment to try to locate him. While first responders were unable to revive the second victim upon locating him, the initial victim that Walton and Kraus rescued was transported to Upstate University Hospital. He recovered from his injuries and was released several days later, due to the decisive actions of Sergeant Walton and Deputy Kraus.
