Oswego Middle School Principal Mary Beth Fierro was honored last week at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., for her selection to the National Distinguished Principals Class of 2017.

Presented by the National Association of Elementary School Principals, Fierro was one of 50 elementary and middle school principals from across the nation recognized for setting high standards for instruction, student achievement, character, and climate for the students, families, and staffs in their learning communities.

Fierro said her experience at the event in the nation’s capital left her “energized” and “humbled,” while heaping praise on her fellow OMS colleagues.

“Ultimately, I’m just a facilitator and coach as the principal and we wouldn’t be able to be a school that’s student-centered and focused on student achievement if we didn’t have everyone on board,” Fierro said. “My goal is to make sure every faculty and staff member knows they’re a part of this team and their contribution is an important one.”

Fierro took the helm at OMS in 2011 after a three-decade career in the Oswego City School District serving as a math teacher, technology and data specialist and athletics coach.

Fierro’s holistic, student-centered educational approach has yielded tremendous results for OMS, including the upgrading of the school’s improvement designation from the state Education Department and the expansion of the SUNY Mentor Scholar program.

“Mrs. Fierro represents all the best attributes of our district’s faculty and staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey. “She works tirelessly to provide a student-centered environment, is always looking for new and innovative ways to improve instruction and programs, and cares deeply about every individuals who walks through the doors of Oswego Middle School.”

“We are lucky to have Mrs. Fierro as a leader in our district and congratulate her on this richly-deserved honor,” Goewey added.
