Oswego Rotary recently heard from club member George DeMass about the Safe Haven Museum located in Oswego NY. Mr. DeMass gave a brief overview of the museum and spoke of the 70th reunion of the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter coming up the weekend of June 19-22, 2014.
The weekend event coincides with the 2014 Jewish Motorcyclists Alliance (JMA) Ride to Remember. The Jewish Motorcyclists Alliance is an umbrella organization consisting of 44 clubs worldwide and has 8,000 members.
Each year a site is chosen for the annual Ride to Remember to memorialize the victims of the Holocaust and to raise money for organizations that support and promote Holocaust education and awareness. The JMA chose the Safe Haven Museum and Education Center as their choice for the 2014 Ride to Remember event. Safe Haven Museum and Education Center is dedicated to keeping alive the stories of 982 refugees from World War II who were allowed into the United States as 'guests' of President Roosevelt from August 1944 until February 1946.
