Earlier this week, the Oswego Varsity Girls Soccer Team presented a donation to the Upstate Cancer Center to fight breast cancer locally.
The team fundraises for the cause every year, and the girls were proud to show their support to breast cancer survivors ahead of their game against ESM on Tuesday. “We choose this game every year to stand with breast cancer survivors to show our support, raise awareness, and help other women struggling, to fight with hope and strength,” said player Molly Wells. The donation was presented to a group of local women who have survived breast cancer, on behalf of the Upstate Cancer Center.
“As a soccer player, I know the power of teamwork,” said player Sadie Pratt. “By supporting and raising awareness, we give hope to millions.”
According to the CDC, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. Early detection saves lives: 5-year survival rates drop by over 12% after tumors have spread outside of the breast. Upstate Medical University’s Mobile Mammography program seeks to improve access to mammograms, an important early screening tool for breast cancer.
Player Izzy Fiorito said, “As a woman and an athlete, it's important to use my platform to support causes like breast cancer awareness. We need to stand together and fight for a cure.”
“It affects women all over the world,” stated player Alaina DiBlasi, “and we want to support the fight for a cure.”
Teammate Amanda Porter added, “I fight breast cancer with the same grit I bring to competition—because the toughest battles are fought off the field, and no one fights alone.”
We at iHeart Oswego are so proud of the work these young women are doing to improve health outcomes for the women in our community and our region. Thank you, and keep up the great work!
