The Oswego YMCA School Age Child Care students and staff are currently working on creating as many handmade holiday cards as possible to be sent to military bases both at home and abroad.
According to Kyle Boeckmann, Oswego YMCA SACC Director, this opportunity was spearheaded by Elizabeth Abbott The SACC Lead Teacher at the Mexico Elementary School location, as well as her nearly 40 staff and students. They are working daily on creating holiday cards that will be sent to Fort Drum, Tyndall Airforce Base in Florida and also to U.S Military Bases throughout the United States and the world. Last year, our program created about 1,000 holiday cards. This year nearly 2,000 have already been made with hopes to double that by the time they are shipped on December 8th.
“This is great opportunity for our kids to understand community and how a simple card can really have a profound impact on someone when they cannot be home this holiday season” said Boeckmann.
Members of the community are invited to participate and send a card. Card guidelines include they be holiday related, not include any reference to violence or include your personal information. For example “Happy Holidays from John in New York!” Cards must also include a picture. If you would like to create a card it may be dropped off to the Oswego YMCA or to the Mexico Elementary School Main Office. The deadline to submit cards is December 7th.
