The air quality alert issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) yesterday continues today, Aug. 4, until 11:59 p.m.
Once again, the advisory is due to fine particulate matter in the atmosphere.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Oswego County’s air quality is “unhealthy” with an index of 152 as of 9 a.m.
People with heart or lung disease, older adults along with children and teens should avoid strenuous outdoor activities today or try to keep them short. They may want to consider moving physical activities inside or rescheduling them when the air quality improves.
All other residents may want to consider the following steps to reduce exposure:
- Choose less strenuous activities – like walking instead of running – so they are not breathing as hard during exercise.
- Shorten the amount of time they are active outside.
- Wait until air quality improves before becoming active outside.
The health department continues to monitor the air quality index across the county and residents will be notified if there are any changes. People can also monitor the air quality index at https://www.airnow.gov/?city=Oswego&state=NY&country=USA.
