Porky & Buddy Column: Donations to HSUS and OCHS

Dear Porky and Buddy: OK, I'm confused and a little annoyed. I just sent a donation to the Humane Society of the United States and almost the very next day, I got a newsletter from the Oswego County Humane Society asking for a donation. Don't they talk to each other? If I send money to the national organization, I assume they just divvy it up, so why can't the Oswego County Humane Society just leave me alone? (Not that I don't enjoy and appreciate their newsletter, but why do they insist upon including that obnoxious donation envelope?) Signed, Barb

Dear Barb,

We are so glad you asked this important question because we would like to clear it up for all of our readers. The Oswego County Humane Society has no connection to the Humane Society of the United States. It is a completely local organization focused on the needs of Oswego County's pets and people. While the HSUS does great work, it does not provide funding for any local humane society, including ours. So your donation to HSUS supports their national and international programs, while your donation to the Oswego County Humane Society supports our local programs. The majority of OCHS's operating income comes from the donations of people like you--who read our newsletter, adopt our pets, volunteer at our events, and appreciate our work. We need you as much as the people and pets of Oswego County need our services. So think of that donation envelope not as an annoyance--but as an inspiration!

Another way to support OCHS without being annoyed! Come to the Fools for Fur Balls Party on Friday, April 1st, from 6 to 10 at Bridie Manor, 1 Bridie Square, Oswego. Music, snacks, contests, prizes, cash bar. Admission $20. A benefit for the fur balls of the Humane Society
