Oswego County Clerk Michael C. Backus warned residents of a telephone scam which claims the person receiving the phone call will have a warrant issued for their arrest if they fail to dial an out-of-state phone number by 5 p.m. that same day and make payment.
The scam turned up in Monroe County this week and appears to be nationwide.
In the Monroe County incident, the caller ID appeared as a number from the Monroe County Clerk’s Office, and the fraudulent person identified herself as calling from the Monroe County Clerk’s Office. In a message left to one resident, the number to return the call was a telemarketing agency in Tennessee.
Residents of Oswego are advised not to provide any information, including credit card, social security number and other personal information via email or phone.
Anyone who receives a fraudulent call of this type should contact the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office at (315) 349-3411 and file a report. The New York State Attorney’s General’s Office has also been alerted.
