This is a quick and fun way to experience the ancient Japanese Raku process of firing pottery by removing the pottery from a hot kiln and cooling it rapidly in open-air containers.
Wonderful unexpected iridescent glazes make the process magical. Billie Jo Peterson, artist and Oswego High School art teacher, will be conducting the Raku workshop in the parking lot of the AAO.
Free to observe, and only $15 if you want to participate in the firing process and take a Raku piece home with you. You will be able to choose a piece of bisque pottery, glaze it, and help in the firing process. People who participate in the firing process must wear eye protection and closed toe shoes.
Where: Art Association of Oswego, located in the red building at the north end of E 4th St, just outside of Fort Ontario. Our GPS address is: 20 Barbara Donahue Drive, Oswego, NY 13126.
When: Saturday, August 31, from 10 AM to 3 PM. People are welcome to come and go at any time during our event; however, please arrive no later than 1 PM if you want to glaze and fire your pottery.
We'll also have refreshments and a tent for shade. Please bring your own chair if you plan to stay a while.
Note: Raku glazes often contain heavy metals, so these containers are for decorative purposes only and should never hold food items. These vessels will also be porous, so they are not suitable for holding water (i.e. flower vases).
