U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) today announced $608,190 in federal funds will be distributed to Owasco Fire Department in Auburn and Howlett Hill Fire Department in Syracuse, allowing the fire departments to obtain personal protective equipment (PPE) for local firefighters.
The funds are available through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG), a program that helps fire departments acquire emergency response equipment, PPE, as well as firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training. The Oswaco and Howlett Hill Fire Departments will use these funds to purchase self-contained breathing apparatuses as well as other equipment used to supply breathable air to firefighters working in hazardous environments. In Congress, Rep. Katko has consistently supported bipartisan efforts to increase funds for AFG. Rep. Katko supported the grant applications submitted by Owasco Fire Department and Howlett Hill Fire Department.
“I’m pleased to announce Owasco Fire Department in Auburn and Howlett Hill Fire Department in Syracuse have received more than $600,000 in funds through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG),” said Rep. Katko. “Firefighters and first responders in Central New York have been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even amid new and challenging conditions, they have efficiently and effectively responded to an array of life-threatening emergencies in our region. With these new funds, the Fire Departments will purchase equipment used to supply breathable air to firefighters working in hazardous environments. I am extremely grateful for the sacrifices local firefighters make to serve and protect our community. I will continue to support first responders and ensure they have the resources they need to remain safe and healthy.”
