“Roots of Renewal” Project Launches to Restore Native Biodiversity Across the St. Lawrence and Eastern Lake Ontario Region

A new regional initiative, the Roots of Renewal: Biodiversity and Habitat Enhancement (BHE) Project, is taking major steps to restore native biodiversity, improve habitat quality, and build climate‑resilient plant communities in urban landscapes.

The project focuses on reducing the spread of invasive species and establishing thriving native plant populations that support pollinators, wildlife, and long‑term ecological health. As part of this effort, five demonstration garden sites have been selected across the region. Each site will showcase native species and serve as a model for communities interested in habitat restoration.

To introduce the project and invite public participation, organizers are hosting two free educational webinars and five hands‑on community planting events. “These events give people a chance to learn how native plants strengthen our ecosystems—and to take part in creating spaces that will benefit the region for years to come,” project leaders shared. “Community involvement is essential to restoring biodiversity at a meaningful scale.”

To attend the events listed below, please visit www.sleloinvasvives.org/events or contact the SLELO PRISM E/O Coordinator at 315-522-1258 to register to attend. Space is limited for the public planting events, so register soon!

Webinars: Recordings will be available on the SLELO website on the BHE project webpage.

The Roots of Renewal project is made possible through a collaboration between the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County and the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM).

By combining education, community engagement, and on‑the‑ground action, the Roots of Renewal BHE project aims to inspire long‑term stewardship and foster healthier, more resilient ecosystems throughout the region.
