The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), a division of SUNY Oswego`s Office of Business and Community Relations, offers a biweekly osteoporosis exercise regimen at more than 20 sites throughout Oswego County.

The RSVP-sponsored classes are self-paced and ensure the program itself does not increase stress or cause pain. The program starts off gently and builds gradually as strength increases. In addition, the sessions are meant to be fun -- participants will get to know other in class, learn and share information, and hopefully increase confidence and independence.

The exercises used in this program were developed by research scientists at Tufts University and are designed to rebuild bone density and improve balance through weight training and exercise. They also help to protect against fractures caused by osteoporosis by increasing muscular strength. The educational format covers lifestyle choices, drug therapies and nutritional information, all of which have an impact in controlling osteoporosis.

Prior to joining a class, prospective participants are encouraged to observe a class and obtain medical clearance. Informational brochures, literature and medical clearance forms are available at all sites, along with certified instructors who are available to answer questions. There are no mandatory fees for the classes, rather a suggested donation of 50 cents per session. The classes are available for people of all ages.

RSVP staff will offer on-site demonstrations to local groups and organizations upon request, free of charge. According to Ellen Wahl, RSVP director, "Osteoporosis is a treatable and potentially avoidable disease. Our objective is to raise osteoporosis awareness; be an advocate for community environments that support healthy lifestyles and facilitate the growth of Bone Builder sites throughout the county."

RSVP is a federal initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is sponsored locally by SUNY Oswego and the United Way. For more information on this and other RSVP programs, or to receive the Mature Living newsletter, call 312-2317 or email rsvp@oswego.edu.
