The Retired and Senior Volunteer program, a division of SUNY Oswego's Office of Business and Community Relations, offers the Osteo Bone Builders exercise program at more than 20 sites throughout Oswego County.

The RSVP-sponsored classes are self-paced and aim to ensure the program itself does not increase stress or cause pain. The program starts off gently and builds as strength increases. Sessions are meant to be fun, and participants get to know each other, learn and share information and focus on increasing confidence and independence.

Osteo Bone Builders exercises were developed by researchers at Tufts University, and are the same as other sites for the course around the country. The program is designed to rebuild bone density and improve balance through weight training and exercise.

The regimen helps to protect against fractures caused by osteoporosis. The educational format covers lifestyle choices, drug therapies and nutritional information, all of which have an impact on controlling osteoporosis.

Prior to joining a class, prospective participants are encouraged to observe a class and obtain medical clearance. RSVP staff and volunteers offer on-site demonstrations to groups and organizations on request. Informational brochures, literature and medical forms are available at all sites, and certified instructors can answer questions.

There are no mandatory fees for classes, just a suggested donation of 50 cents per session. Classes are available for all ages.

Following are current the Osteo Bone Builders sites and schedules for Oswego:
Tuesday and Thursday,10-11 a.m., First United Methodist Church on Route 104 west,

Nationally, RSVP reached its 40th anniversary this year. It is part of a nationwide network of Senior Corps programs, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Each of the 700-plus RSVP programs is sponsored by a nonprofit agency; in Oswego County, SUNY Oswego sponsors RSVP, a United Way member agency.
