Fort Ontario State Historic Site offers a free self-guided hike to help kick off the New Year!

Between 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, participants can pick up a brochure inside the old stone fort located at 1 E. Fourth St., Oswego.

The theme for this year’s walk highlights sports and athletics throughout Fort Ontario’s history.

Fort staff remind participants to dress for cold and windy lakeside weather conditions and wear appropriate shoes for walking. Restrooms will be available.

In the event of inclement weather, check Friends of Fort Ontario’s Facebook page for updates.

First Day Hikes are held throughout New York State in coordination with the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. They are intended to encourage people to begin the New Year by reconnecting with the outdoors.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which are visited by 78 million people annually.

For more information on any of these recreational areas, visit www.parks.ny.gov, download the free NYS Parks Explorer mobile app or call 315-474-0456.  Also, connect on Facebook, Instagram and X.
