State Senator Christopher J. Ryan on the ICE Shootings in Minneapolis

The tragic murder of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by ICE agents represents a devastating second fatal use of force by federal officers in the span of a month—following the widely condemned shooting of Renée Good in early January.

Mr. Pretti possessed a legal, open carry firearm permit and had no criminal history. The videos are gruesome and shocking. Both of these tragedies at the hands of federal officers are unacceptable.

All people, regardless of political party or legal status, must be shown humanity. Every federal officer swears a solemn oath to support and defend the Constitution. It is deeply troubling when the use of deadly force appears inconsistent with the duty to protect and serve all Americans equally under law.

My heart goes out to the victims, their families, and their communities who are bearing the grief of these losses. I strongly believe that ICE’s practices must be reformed, that those responsible be held accountable, and that the safety and civil rights of everyone be upheld in every community.
