Oswego County STOP-DWI Coordinator David Hall reports that police agencies and STOP-DWI coordinators across the state will continue their end-of-summer “High Visibility Engagement Campaign” through Labor Day, Sept. 2.
The special effort aims to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and provide additional law enforcement patrols.
“While many of us spend the Labor Day holiday celebrating the end of summer with our loved ones, law enforcement officers across New York State will take to the roads in an effort to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives,” said Hall.
Sobriety checkpoints play a key part in raising awareness about the issue. Research shows that these well-publicized, high-visibility campaigns can save lives by reducing the incidence of drunk and impaired driving by as much as 20%.
Hall reminds residents that they can help make a difference by having a sober plan. “Impaired driving is preventable, it just takes a little planning,” he said. “Have a designated driver, call a taxi or rideshare service, or download the free STOP-DWI mobile app ‘Have a Plan’ at www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp and you’ll always be able to find a safe ride home.”
The STOP-DWI Labor Day weekend campaign is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI New York and the NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Other campaigns around the year target Halloween, Thanksgiving, the December holiday season, Superbowl weekend, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day weekend and Independence Day.
