Superintendent of Thunder Bay NMS To Speak

Around this time last year, Oswego County began conversations with the City of Oswego and the Counties of Wayne, Cayuga and Jefferson regarding their interest in a partnership that would result in a proposal to have the adjacent U.S. portion of Lake Ontario designated as a National Marine Sanctuary (NMS).

The proposal is based on the extensive amount of submerged historic resources that exist here and is meant only to help preserve and protect those resources for future generations. We are close to finalizing the proposal for this exciting opportunity and would like invite you to learn more about it. Details are available at http://www.lakeontarioms.com.

Thunder Bay NMS is the only other National Marine Sanctuary in the Great Lakes that exists today although others have been proposed. Coincidentally, the Thunder Bay NMS on Lake Huron was also designated based on its historic value to the region and the nation. Given the similarity between their NMS and our proposed initiative, we have invited Jefferson Gray, the Superintendent of the Thunder Bay NMS, to speak to interested stakeholders like you and share with you the successes they have experienced and the lessons they have learned from their designation.

On behalf of Kevin Gardner, Chairman of the Oswego County Legislature, we hope that you will consider joining us for Jeff's presentation. Thr presentation will be held at the Lake Ontario Conference Center on Wednesday, June 22nd, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
