Thomas William (Bill) Flynn, 79, of Ellen St. Oswego, died August 7, 2017 at the Syracuse Veterans Medical Center.

Born May 17, 1938 in Auburn, he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Anne (Quinn) Flynn.

Bill attended Kingsford Park Elementary School and was a graduate of Oswego High School, class of 1955.

Bill received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hamilton College and earned a Masters Degree in International Relations from John Hopkins University.

He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964 assigned to the National Security Agency as a Translator and Cryptographer.

Following his Honorable Discharge from the Army, Bill joined the staff at Schuyler Preparatory School, Schuylerville, NY, where he taught High School French, English, Asian history and remedial math. He also held the position of Assistant to the Headmaster.

In the mid 1970’s, Bill returned to Oswego to care for his ailing mother. During this time, he was asked to take the position of Superintendent for St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. A position held until 1980 when he became the Director of Religious Education at St. John the Evangelist Church.

In 1995, Bill was hired as the Business Manager and the Director of Faith Formation for the Twin Parishes of St. John the Evangelist, Pulaski and St. Frances Xavier Cabrini in Lacona, now known as Christ Our Light Catholic Community. Bill held the position of Business Manager up until May of this year.

Bill’s hobbies included downhill and cross-country skiing, ice skating, swimming, yoga and the arts. He was a long-standing member of the Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocesan Pastoral Council, the past chairperson of a regional pastoral council as well as a member of the Diocesan Liturgy Committee.

Bill is survived by his cousins, Marguerite Corcoran O’Gorman, Rogene Corcoran Henrie and Esther Corcoran Namian.

The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, August 21 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 103 West 7th Street, Oswego, by his friend Rev. John F. Hogan, Jr.

Donations may be made in Bill’s memory to St. Mary’s Preservation Fund.

Arrangements are by Nelson’s Funeral Home.
