To the Editor: Oswego County is a Bellwether

Write a comment

National headlines have rightly noted Democratic victories in New Jersey and Virginia this fall, but the deeper story lies in New York.

Politico reported on November 28 that Democrats flipped more than 50 county legislative seats across the state, while Republicans managed just one. That outcome is not a minor shift—it is a profound realignment.

The numbers tell the story. A Politico review of 268 county, town, and village executive branch races found an average 10-point increase in the Democratic margin. Democrats gained seats in at least 18 county legislatures, including historic breakthroughs in Ulster and Onondaga. But perhaps the most striking example comes from Oswego County.

Oswego is not a swing county. Trump carried it by 27 points in 2024, and for generations its politics have been defined by Republican dominance. Yet this November, Democrats flipped five seats in the county legislature. That is not just a local victory—it is a political earthquake. In a place where Democrats have long struggled to gain traction, voters turned out in numbers that reshaped the balance of power. The message is unmistakable: even in deep-red strongholds, economic anxiety and frustration with failed leadership are driving voters toward change.

As the midterms approach, the lesson is clear: the Democratic surge is not limited to blue enclaves. It is spreading into red counties, rural towns, and communities across New York. Oswego County proves that the tide has turned, and Republicans ignore that reality at their peril.

It is time for Oswego County residents to build on the gains that voters have already delivered. The path to a new majority in County Legislature runs through places like Oswego—and the voters must act boldly to ensure this historic shift translates into lasting change.

And the public has a chance to make its voice heard again. On December 11th, the Oswego County Legislature will meet to consider questionable salary increases for legislators, the county clerk, treasurer, and sheriff. Citizens should attend, speak out, and remind their leaders that these victories were won on promises of accountability, not self-enrichment. Oswego is the bellwether—and the legislators should take careful note.

Sincerely,

Doreen Arcadi
