The character of Volney Elementary students will blossom in conjunction with the planted flower seedlings they will present to special ladies for Mother’s Day.

Recognizing the importance of doing good deeds for others, students in grades pre-kindergarten through six painted clay pots with the assistance of art teacher Amanda Hurlbutt, filled the pots with soil and selected a marigold or zinnia plant for their mother, grandmother, or other positive role model. All materials were donated by Robert Scott, who said it was heartwarming to see the joy in each child, knowing they will have a gift to offer someone.

While some students could recite the life cycle of plants upon reflection of academic lessons learned in class, the underlying lesson Scott helped teach during his time at the school centered on acts of kindness. Giving back to the community, he said, is something he often speaks about with his children, Volney Elementary students Braydn and Jason Scott.
