William R. Gomon, 86, of Oswego N.Y. passed away peacefully and with his family on Thursday May 15, 2014.
He grew up in Fulton N.Y. and was the son of the late Leon and Bertha (Bero) Gomon . He was the youngest of ten children. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served in World War II on the USS Jason and USS Black Hawk. During his time of service he was honored with the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Oswego N.Y. and began his career as a Warehouse Manager for many companies but most notably, Marathon and Hammermill Paper where he became a member of the Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers Union #359 and acted as the Union President for many years while at Hammermill. He retired from the Hammermill Paper in August 1978.
He was a proud and active Lifetime member of the American Legion #268, Oswego Elk's Lodge #271 and VFW #2320. He was a great supporter of all Veteran's organizations and what they stood for and who they supported. He never turned down the opportunity to thank a veteran young and old alike. He enjoyed many things but he always looked foward to a good card game with his friends, sitting outside in the sun on a warm day, going for long rides and most of all socializing with everyone he met. He will always be remembered as a social butterfly.
He was predeceased by his wife of 32 years, Virginia (Elkin) Gomon and his daughter, Bertha Hansen. His children include, Sylvia (George) Smith of Oswego, James (Ann Marie Read) Gomon of Phoenix Az., Grace (Alan) Pritchard of Myrtle Beach,SC and Robert (Ruth) Gomon of Oswego. He also had two loving and devoted granddaughters, Michelle (Donald) Turner of Oswego and Heather Pritchard of Murrels Inlet, SC and one great grandson, Ethan Pritchard of Murrells Inlet,SC.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 6:00pm from the Dowdle Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Oswego Town Rural Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 3:00-6:00 prior to the service.
