Event tonight, Monday February 2—
The InterFaith Works El-Hindi Center for Dialogue & Action with the Roundtable of Faith Leaders are pleased to present a World Interfaith Harmony Day event on Monday, February 2 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Syracuse. This event features a celebration of unity and shared humanity, with stories shared by members of ten different faith communities. InterFaith Works President/CEO, Chris Foley will offer welcoming remarks. Refreshments following the event are sponsored by Women Transcending Boundaries.
Chris Foley, President/CEO of InterFaith Works commented, "At InterFaith Works, we’re rooted in a belief that many traditions share: every person has inherent worth. And community isn’t something we simply inherit, or that simply happens, it’s something we build. We build it through service, through dialogue, through partnership, and through daily choices that say to one another, you belong here."
World Interfaith Harmony Week is an initiative of the United Nations, started in 2010. It is observed the first week of February each year. It is a call for leaders of various faith practices to engage in dialogue based on two common fundamental Commandments - Love of God and Love of the Neighbor. Ideally, the initiative shines light on the common values individuals hold and how those commonalities outweigh the differences. This creates a stronger sense of peace and harmony in their larger communities.
Bishop Colette Matthews-Carter, Director of the El-Hindi Center for Dialogue & Action shared, "InterFaith understanding is the hallmark of social witness. As faith communities connect, they find common ground in our shared humanity."
InterFaith Works affirms the dignity of each person and every faith tradition, builds racial and religious equity, and creates bridges of understanding among us. Celebrating 50 years of service, InterFaith Works inspires joy and connection among older adults, fosters understanding across communities, offers new beginnings and safe refuge, and empowers individuals served through meaningful programs and events.
