The Zonta Club of Oswego is partnering with Girl Scouts from NYPENN Pathways to host a celebration of International Women’s Day at the SUNY Oswego Newman Center on March 8, 2014 at 3pm.

International Women's Day is a global celebration of women's achievements throughout history and across nations. The event will feature displays, presentations and stories about women and girls around the globe.

Sabine Ingerson, Chair of Zonta's Legislative Advocacy and Awareness Committee, describes her vision of the event as an opportunity to connect women's groups in the community and to learn about some of the unique experiences of women all over the world. "We invite women and girls in the Oswego community to join us to celebrate this special day", Ingerson said.

Zonta will be collecting donations at the event for birthing kits, which provide essential items to women who give birth at home in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 300,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year. Most of these deaths occur in developing countries. Supplies for birthing kits include: bar soap 1 to 2oz size, 2" gauze, latex gloves, one edge razor blades, 3' by 3' plastic sheeting 4ml thick, cotton string, gallon size resealable bags, and receiving blankets 30 x 30 or 32" X 32" (no fleece please).

Ingerson said, "Having the right supplies and a clean area when giving birth can help increase the chance that the mom and baby will survive."
