The Zonta Club of Oswego has planned an evening of entertainment, learning and fun from 5:30 to 8:00 pm on March 8th at the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation (CiTi) in Mexico.

Anchoring the evening will be special activities for young women ages 12-18 in order to promote women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Sponsored by Novelis, Walton Robotics and Girls First, participants will have the opportunity to build a sling-shot rocket. The project is designed with the philosophy that creative beauty and functionality can go hand-in-hand. The second STEM session will be led by CiTi professor Peri Nelson-Sukert and will allow girls to explore Makey/Makey, a computer program for online inventing and programming.

In addition to the STEM sessions, other interactive presentations and workshops will be open to women of all ages and will focus on enrichment and well-being. “We invite women of all ages to come out and enjoy the renovated CiTi campus and learn something new.” said Zonta member Iraina Gerchman.

The symposium is the Zonta Club of Oswego’s third annual celebration of International Women’s Day. Recognized throughout the world, International Women’s Day was first observed in the early 1900’s to bring attention to women’s rights. This year’s theme of “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity” reflects the continued need to build support for women’s rights and equality in political and economic arenas.

“Seeing more young women pursue the STEM fields is an important step in building gender equality and in helping young women reach their highest potential. We are thrilled that Novelis and CiTi are partnering with us to offer this amazing opportunity for girls in Oswego County” Gerchman noted.

Registration for the event is recommended. The link for registration is http://goo.gl/forms/pJ1YQbhKPk. Door prizes will be given out and refreshments will be served. For more information visit the Zonta Club of Oswego’s Facebook page or contact Iraina Gerchman at ladymacbeth1963@hotmail.com.
