For 31 years, the Zonta Club of Oswego has presented their prestigious Ameila Earhart Woman of Achievement Award to a woman who has dedicated herself to her community and who serves as a role model for young women.
This year, Cheryl Rogers will be the award winner at their 32nd Annual Amelia Earhart Woman of Achievement Dinner, which will be held on Friday, September 23 at the American Foundry in Oswego.
Cheryl Rogers is passionate about music and about sharing all the gifts that music has to offer. Recently retired from Oswego High School after 35 years in public education, Rogers spent a career encouraging, shaping and molding her students into skilled young musicians and performers. She is beloved and respected among her students and colleagues.
With a Bachelor of Science in music education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Science in music education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Rogers started her career in music education in 1978 in Wellsville, NY. In 1984, Rogers was invited to join the Oswego City School District to launch a string program and soon immersed herself in all aspects of the district’s music program, including orchestra, marching band, drum corps and school musicals. Rodgers’ legacy extends far beyond the borders of Oswego County. Over the course of her career she has released to the community thousands of students who have retained a love and appreciation of music. In her retirement, Cheryl plans to continue to share her gifts and talents in Oswego County and across the country.
In addition to her aviation career, Amelia Earhart has been prominent figure in Zonta International as an early member of the organization in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Earhart’s many achievements inspired the Zonta Club of Oswego to establish this award in her name as a role model for excellence and going above and beyond. It is fitting to honor to Rogers with this special award, as she has spent a career going above and beyond and inspiring others to soar.
Proceeds from the Amelia Earhart Dinner support three college scholarships for young women from Oswego County as well as other programming aimed at improving the lives of women and girls.
