Another Reason I Heart Oswego: Strudels

Another Reason I Heart Oswego: Strudels

During my lunch break, I decided to take a trip to Port City, as I always frequent that cafe because of its delicious pastries and iced coffee.

As I looked at the neatly-displayed rows of pastries, one in particular caught my eye: strawberry creme strudel. Even before entering the doors of Port City Cafe, I automatically allowed myself one iced coffee, an essential drink for a long day of work ahead.

The pastry display case was quickly emptying as customers requested half moon cookies and muffins. The strawberry creme strudel was thinning out too.

The flaky crust combined with a fresh strawberry and creme filling reminded me of a pastry I used to eat when I was younger. I suddenly found myself daydreaming of the rare days when my mother used to treat my sister and myself to pastries. The creme in the strudel had a subtle taste so when it mixed with the strawberries, it suddently became sweet.

Some of the strudel's flakes crumbled onto the floor, where our company rescue dog Benny quickly cleaned it up enthusiastically.

I remembered how the pastires my mother used to buy me flaked all over the floor, waiting for ants to carry them away. I thought about my family back on Long Island and how I missed them, just from one bite of the strudel.

     Memories and sweet pastries.

And that's another reason I heart Oswego.
