ARISE hosts nutrition classes for consumers

ARISE hosts nutrition classes for consumers

In an effort to help empower consumers reach their personal goals of living healthier lives, ARISE recently organized two eight-week classes on nutrition.

With the support of the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), consumers were able to participate in a free eight-week program designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to improve their diet and overall health.
Pam Marion, nutrition program educator for the CCE, led interactive workshops at the ARISE Oswego office. Topics ranged from proper portion sizes to identifying whole grains and decoding nutrition labels.
Not only were the group classes a fun way to develop healthier eating habits, they also provided an opportunity for consumers to bond and develop financial skills in budgeting and money management. A group trip to the grocery store demonstrated how to maximize coupons to save money, calculate unit prices for products, and plan their meals around the specials of the week.
After graduating from the class, one of the participants shared that she has switched to 1% milk and is working to eat within her recommended calorie range. Others have reported switching to whole wheat bread, increasing the amount of vegetables in their diet, eating breakfast, and increasing their activity levels.
"We are proud of the progress our consumers have made in achieving their personal goals and look forward to continuing our work to help people with disabilities in our community achieve success," Sabine Ingerson, director of the Oswego County Office of ARISE, said.
