CARE Program Adds Mentor Partnership for Students

CARE Program Adds Mentor Partnership for Students

The Credit Accrual and Recovery for Everyone (CARE) program at SUNY Oswego has done more for its high school participants than get their education back on track.

Thanks to the new Mentor-Scholar component, young adults such as Oswego City School District student Devin Ball have broken out of their shells and excelled with personal goals. Ball, a self-admitted introvert, said working with SUNY Oswego mentors a few days a week has helped him open up to those around him.

“It’s just been so good,” said CARE Principal Robyn Proud. “Since we are in our third year at CARE, with the number of students we really needed to add that one-on-one mentor for support.”

Students who attend CARE have struggled in traditional learning environments within their home school district. Proud said the Mentor-Scholar program has given the 38 CARE students comfort, understanding and acceptance, which have all been a crucial to their added personal and academic successes since the beginning of the 2017-218 school year.

Alyssa Amyotte, assistant Mentor-Scholar program coordinator, said the program will operate on a trial basis in its first year with CARE. SUNY Oswego college students have been paired with CARE students to serve as positive role models, assist with homework when needed and to hone in on socialization efforts and goals. Mentors and mentees will be paired together for both college semesters.

She added that CARE students are more accepting of help from SUNY Oswego students, as they are in more of a peer-role.
