Donnelly Tosses Shutout As Lakers Down Jumbos

The No. 7 and top-seeded Oswego State baseball team continued its march in the NCAA New York Regional with a 1-0 win over Tufts University on Friday afternoon. Oswego moves to 30-8 overall and 2-0 in the regional round, while the Jumbos fall to 30-10-1 and has been eliminated with an 0-2 record.

Robert Donnelly led the Lakers in this contest, which featured a pair of dominating pitching performances. The junior hurler tossed a complete-game shutout, surrendering just six hits and struck out nine. Donnelly outdueled Tuft's R.J. Hall, who also went the full nine innings and took the loss with a single run allowed.

Following a tense sixth inning where the Jumbos were able to get a runner to third with one out, Donnelly steadied and rolled to the finish line. He kept the baserunner at third with a strikeout, before inducing a groundball to third.

During the subsequent frame, the New City, N.Y. native struck out three batters, stopping any potential rally. Donnelly allowed one runner through the eighth and ninth and worked around a pair of errors in the earlier to set down the Jumbos without allowing a run.

Over the first seven-plus innings, both teams traded jabs, but neither was able to grab the lead. In the eighth, Wes Randall led off by earning a base on balls. He advanced to second and then third on a passed ball and wild pitch, respectively. Two outs later, John Barnes blooped a single into shallow center on a 1-1 count, driving in the Laker baserunner.

Elsewhere, Mike Dellicarri, Lukas Olsson and Josh Hoagland had the other Oswego hits as the team managed four base knocks.

Oswego advances to face the winner of the University of South Maine Huskies and The College of New Jersey Lions at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
