First Half Scoring And Saves Lead Lakers To Win

First Half Scoring And Saves Lead Lakers To Win

The Oswego State women's lacrosse team used a high-scoring first half to power past host Utica College 13-5 on Tuesday afternoon. Oswego's victory brings its record to 3-1 on the year while the Pioneers fall to 3-3.

Tuesday's contest started with two goals from the Lakers before Utica broke onto the scoreboard. The visiting team put to rest any hopes of the Pioneers tying the tilt, rattling off six unanswered goals to hold an 8-1 advantage at halftime. Oswego tacked on two more in the early portion of the second half, making it eight-straight tallies and a 10-1 margin.

Emily Lange was a key factor in the offensive display for the Lakers, recording a career-high seven points. The senior's four goals were a game-high while her three assists tied sisters Erannan Shattuck and Teresa Shattuck for another game-high. E. Shattuck also tacked on two goals in the outing for the second-most Laker points with five.

Joining the aforementioned Lakers with multiple points were sophomore Gemma O'Kane, junior Briana Kimble and a pair of seniors; Lindsey Eggers and Esther Gabriel. Kimble and Eggers each registered two goals while Gabriel and O'Kane were balanced with a goal and an assist apiece. Eggers had a team-high three draw controls as well, while five others gathered one each.

It was not all offense for Oswego, however, as sophomore Angela Ponto stopped a career-high 14 shots-on goal, tying her outing against Clarkson University on March 10 of last season. As a defensive unit, the Lakers forced Utica into 16 turnovers, led by Gabriel and Nicole Granteed's three each. Granteed was scrappy throughout the contest, collecting an Oswego-best five ground balls.

Oswego will now put its three-game win streak on the line at 4 p.m. on Friday when it hosts the University of Rochester at Laker Turf Stadium.
