Hamilton Breaks Career Hit Record in Sweep of Plattsburgh

Hamilton Breaks Career Hit Record in Sweep of Plattsburgh

The nationally-ranked Oswego State baseball team swept a conference doubleheader against Plattsburgh on Monday in the squad's first games at Laker Baseball Field for the 2017 campaign.

Eric Hamilton highlighted the day as a single up the middle in game two – his fourth hit of the afternoon – put the senior atop the Oswego record books with the most hits in a career (187). Hamilton surpassed Hall of Famer Jamie Rutherford's previous mark of 186 with the Liverpool, N.Y. native's 31st hit of the year. Oswego is now 16-6 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC while Plattsburgh is 4-11, 0-5.

OSWEGO 7, PLATTSBURGH 0:

After a scoreless first frame for both teams, the Lakers were able to plate two runs in each of the next three innings to have a stranglehold on the contest. A single run in the seventh for Oswego rounded out the tilt's scoring. The hitting paired with Mitchell Cavanagh's six innings of two-hit work on the mound was a recipe for victory. Cavanagh remained perfect on the year at 5-0, striking out six while allowing just three Cardinals to reach base.

Andrew Morano, Brad Wroblewski and Patrick Gosney split the final three innings evenly, combining to surrender just one hit.

At the plate, Oswego was paced by Hamilton's 3-for-4 outing with a run driven in, a run scored, a double, a stolen base and a walk. Wes Randall, John Barnes, Eli Holton and Zach Kollar finished with two hits and a run scored each. Kollar ripped a double and drove in two runs while Randall also had two RBI. Barnes tallied one RBI in the outing.

OSWEGO 2, PLATTSBURGH 0:

Oswego received another solid pitching effort in the nightcap as senior ace Tim Cronin worked a complete, seven-inning game. Cronin needed just an economical 83 pitches to strikeout six Plattsburgh batters – three of which were looking – without allowing a base on balls. The Cardinals were only able to muster three hits off of Cronin and none went for extra bases. Cronin remains unblemished on the year, improving his record to 6-0 on the year.

Hamilton again led the way with the only multiple-hit performance in the game. He went 2-for-3 with an RBI, with the first hit breaking the program record. Kollar, Alex Brown, Robert Donnelly and Josh Hoagland each had a hit, with Donnelly plating Kyle Simmons for the other Laker run.

Plattsburgh and Oswego will closeout its three-game series with a single, nine-inning game at 12 p.m. on Tuesday.
