Lakers Complete First Day of SUNYAC Championship

Lakers Complete First Day of SUNYAC Championship

The Oswego State men’s and women’s track and field teams completed the first day of the SUNYAC Championship on Friday. After day one, the men sit in fifth place of the nine SUNYAC teams with 13 points, while the women earned eight points to rank sixth among the nine conference competitors.

The majority of the teams’ points came from impressive performances in the distance medley relays. With a combined time of 10:30.10, Tim Olmsted, Zach Levine, Kevin Clifford and Justin Sommer snagged first place and 10 points for their team. The women’s squad, made up of Jamie Kasza, Carly Vreugde, Rachel Meyer and Kayla Wheeler, posted a time of 13:08.97 to place fourth in their relay and earn five points.

Both the men’s and women’s teams also collected points from the 5000-meter race. Colin Greenseich earned the top individual finish of the day for the men in the event, placing sixth with a time of 15:25.80 to capture three points. For the women, Morgan Bronner took eighth with a time of 19:00.01. The senior’s time was a new career-best.

For the women, the top individual finish of the day came from Carly Vreugde in the first round of the 400-meter race. Clocking a time of 1:00.32, Vreudge earned fourth place and a spot in Saturday’s final round.

The Lakers posted a trio of seventh-place finishes in the first round of three different events. First, in the 60-meter hurdles, Akim Cadet set a new personal record with a time of 8.87 to qualify for the final round on Saturday. Then, the men and women both claimed seventh in the 800-meter race. Kayla Wheeler, who finished with a time of 2:23.05, will represent the women in the final, while Nick LeClair, who clocked a time of 1:58.63, will represent the men in the final.

In the field events, the Lakers found the most success in the triple jump. Bella Dockery and Tylea McCarthy-Walker both claimed top-10 finishes in the event. With a distance of 11.02, Dockery took seventh, while McCarthy-Walker followed two spots behind with a distance of 10.74.

Both teams will return to action tomorrow for the final day of the SUNYAC Championships.
