News from the Assembly Minority Leader

Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

Will Barclay

After a great deal of consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election to the 120th Assembly District. I intend to step down as Minority Leader in the coming days, allowing for a smooth transition to new leadership early in the legislative session.

Lakers Split Softball Doubleheader with New Paltz

The Oswego State softball team split with New Paltz in their doubleheader on Friday. With the split, the Lakers move to 12-8 on the season and 5-3 in SUNYAC play, while the Hawks move to 11-12-1 overall and 4-2 in conference action.

In game one, starter Rebecca Vilchez made quick work of the New Paltz lineup in the first two innings. In the third however, the Hawks managed to put a run on the board with two singles and a sacrifice bunt.

The Lakers answered with a run of their own in the fourth. Angela Frampton led off the inning by smacking a double to left field. Gabriella Vertuccio then moved pinch runner Claire Hewitt over to third by executing a sacrifice bunt. After Sarah McCullough drew a walk, Carly Lawless' grounder to the shortstop was all it would take for Hewitt to come around and tie the game.

Vilchez silenced the Hawks' bats again in the fourth, but New Paltz managed to take a 4-1 lead in the fifth that held for the rest of the game.

In game one, Vilchez's three hits were a game-high for the Lakers. Madelana Wrubel also recorded a multi-hit game, notching a pair of singles.

In game two, Frampton dominated on the mound, allowing just three hits and one earned run. The junior struck out five Hawk batters and did not allow a single walk.

The Laker bats came to Frampton's aid in the sixth inning. Frampton started things off by helping her own cause, singling in Vilchez to tie the game. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Taylor DuBois came through with a clutch single to knock in Wrubel and give Oswego the lead. With the bases still loaded, Emily Knowlden drew a walk to put Oswego up 3-1.

Sarah McCullough kept things going when she stroked a single up the middle to bring home DuBois and Vertuccio. Vilchez later tacked on the final run of the inning with a single of her own to score Katharine Brown to put the Lakers up 6-1.

In the seventh, Oswego added on another insurance run. Frampton led off with her second single of the game, and a single by DuBois put her on third. Knowlden then ripped a double to left center to knock in Frampton and give Oswego a 7-1 lead.
