Tylea McCarthy-Walker of the Oswego State women's track and field team has received U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honors, and has qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The competition will take place from May 24-26 at the Veteran's Memorial Field Sports Complex in La Crosse, Wisc.
A student-athlete earns All-Region honors by ranking in the top-five in his or her region in a particular event. McCarthy-Walker was one of 667 female athletes to receive this distinction.
At the NCAA Championships, McCarthy-Walker will compete as the 19th seed in the long jump event. The sophomore's qualifying distance of 5.72 meters came at the Cortland Please Stop Snowing Challenge on April 16. McCarthy-Walker's mark, which was nearly two feet farther than the runner-up at the invitational, set a new program record. The Marion, N.Y. native earned the SUNYAC Athlete of the Week award for her accomplishment.
For each of the women's events at the NCAA Championships, the top 22 student-athletes received a qualifying spot. McCarthy-Walker is one of three SUNYAC competitors in the long jump, as she will compete against Camille Wutz of Geneseo and Chanyce Powell of Brockport.
