Oswego State baseball ends regular season by sweeping RIT

OS BaseballPlaying the last two games on its regular season schedule before the SUNYAC Tournament, the Oswego State baseball team (23-13) defeated RIT (11-20) by scores of 15-4 and 5-4. The Lakers closed out the regular season by winning 13 of its final 16 games.

Oswego State slugged its way to victory in game one, scoring 12 runs in the first four innings to bury RIT in an insurmountable deficit. Scott Buniak (Jr., Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored the first run of the game on a single to second base by Tim Smith (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) in the first inning. Brian Hamilton (So., Liverpool, N.Y.) doubled home Mike McMullen (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) and a single to left field by Andrew Lazzaro (Sr., Oswego, N.Y.) brought home Smith and Hamilton later in the inning to pull out to an early 4-0 lead. The hitting attack continued in the second inning as the Lakers plated six more runs for a 10-0 Laker lead. McMullen singled to left bringing home Ed Charles (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.), Hamilton singled through the left side to score Mike Stark (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) and Buniak, Lazzaro took the ball the other way to single home McMullen and Hamilton, and Lazzaro came home on a fielder's choice hit into by John Rauseo (So., Mattituck, N.Y.).

Oswego State piled on two more runs in the fourth, extending the advantage to 12-0. Alex Jurczynski (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.) singled to shortstop to score Hamilton and Charles shot a single up the middle to plate Lazzaro. The Tigers got into the score column in the bottom half of the fourth to bring the deficit to 12-2.  In the fifth, the Lakers and Tigers each plated two runs to make the score 14-4. Tom Curry (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) singled to opposite field to score Dylan Parmenter (Sr., Bennington, Vt.) and Lazzaro walked with the bases loaded to bring in Tyler Baker (Jr., Hannibal, N.Y.). Baker singled to right field in the sixth to score Charles for the final score of 15-4.

The Lakers compiled a total of 19 hits in the game with Charles leading the way with four. Lazzaro led the team with a career-high five RBI. Adam Bishop (Sr., Camillus, N.Y.) earned the victory in just two innings without allowing a run to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Game two started out the same for Oswego State, which scored five unanswered runs to start the game and held on for the one-run win. McMullen provided a timely double to right center in the first to bring around Stark and Buniak. The Lakers added three more runs in the third after Smith's single to right field scored Stark and McMullen, and Michael Mascari (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) singled home Smith for a 5-0 Oswego State lead. RIT answered with three runs in the third and one in the fifth, but Pat Brown (Jr., Liverpool, N.Y.) and Ryan Donovan (Jr., Utica, N.Y.) shut the door on the Tigers in the final two frames for the 5-4 Lakers win

Buniak and McMullen had two hits for the Lakers apiece. Miles Kelly (Fr., Clifton Park, N.Y.) earned the win for Oswego State, the first of his collegiate career after throwing two scoreless innings.  Donovan earned his fourth save of the season.

The Lakers travel to Cortland, Friday, May 3, to take on New Paltz in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament at 3:30 p.m.
