Oswego State men`s lacrosse drops 11-10 overtime heartbreaker to No.16 Plattsburgh

OS Lacross Joey Kramer scored an overtime goal 1:36 into the extra frame to help 16th-ranked Plattsburgh (9-3, 1-1 SUNYAC) hand the Oswego State men's lacrosse team (6-3, 1-1, SUNYAC) an 11-10 loss.

The Lakers held a two-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals erased the deficit and carried that momentum into overtime.

Cody Hoose (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) paced the Oswego State offense with three goals, while Connor Khammar (So., Camillus, N.Y.) and Chris Porten (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) added two goals apiece. Kramer finished the game with three goals followed by a pair of goals from Brendan Damm, Brett McClelland and Nick Travers.

Oswego State's Nick Giampaolo (Jr., Setauket, N.Y.) and Cody Hoose (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) put the home team out in front 2-0 in the first five minutes, but Tim Lawrence scored with 6:19 remaining in the quarter to get Plattsburgh on the scoreboard.

The last five minutes of the frame proved to be highly eventful as Matt Palmer (So., Pittsford, N.Y.) netted a man-up goal after receiving a pass from Jimmy Cordon (So., Camillus, N.Y.) before the Cardinals ripped off four straight markers to go ahead 5-3. However, Casey Balzer (Sr., Nassau, N.Y.) found Porten cutting towards the cage with five seconds remaining to pull the Lakers to within one to open the second quarter.

After Plattsburgh scored off the opening faceoff, Giampaolo hooked up with Khammar and Hoose tallied an unassisted goal to knot the game at 6-6. Both teams exchanged goals before the end of the stanza to enter the half deadlocked at seven.

Oswego State found the back of the cage twice early in the third quarter when Cordon and Porten scored less than two minutes apart for the only goals of the frame.

However, Plattsburgh started the fourth with a man-up opportunity as a penalty was called on the Lakers at the end of the third. McClelland capitalized for the Cardinals to bring the visitors back to within one. Two minutes later, Khammar buried a pass from Palmer, but Plattsburgh grabbed the momentum back when Damm scored his second goal of the game. Both teams went up and down the field until Kramer tied the game with 2:53 left in regulation. The Lakers had possession in the final minute, but Porten's shot went wide of the cage as time expired.

Plattsburgh won the opening faceoff in overtime, but Oswego State goalie Bryan Martin (Jr., St. James, N.Y.) made a save to give the ball back to the Lakers. Oswego State was unable to clear the ball, though, as the Cardinals regained possession, allowing Kramer to score the game-winner.

Martin ended the contest with 20 saves, as the Lakers were out-shot 48-31. Eric Howard picked up the win in the cage for Plattsburgh after making eight stops.

The Lakers hit the road Wednesday, April 10, for a key conference contest at Potsdam starting at 7 p.m.
